CHAPTER SEVEN

The rest of that day felt pretty productive.

Securing the utilities building wasn’t all that difficult. They just had to patch a pair of windows, and ended up welding some iron bars into place. The bunkhouse was a bit more of a pain. The warehouse was the real bitch of a problem, and although they made progress on it, David imagined that it was going to take a lot of time and effort to make it actually secure. They paused for meals and breaks three times before the sun set.

Jennifer and Lina crawled all over the boat, found a pair of clipboards, some paper and pens, and began writing down everything that was wrong. As soon as they had a complete list of problems that needed to be fixed to make the boat seaworthy, they assembled a little task force consisting of themselves, Cait, David, and Ruby to check the dockyards over for these parts. That was what they ended up doing until the sun went down and that was what ultimately made the bulk of that day feel productive, if a bit tedious.

“So where are we at?” Stern asked after they had completed their search of the dockyards.

The dry-dock had transformed since they’d first found it. The bodies had been cleared out, the windows covered up and secured, the refuse and broken furniture gathered and tossed away after determining whether or not it could be used, and a quartet of big, metal tables had been set up in a circle around the boat. The tops of these tables were now scattered with all manner of nuts, bolts, scrap metal, spare parts, diagrams, drawings, tools, and a random assortment of other things that the pair of engineers thought they might need.

“The boat is in surprisingly good condition,” Lina reported. Her face was smudged with oil and grease at this point, as was Jennifer’s, and their clothes were dusty and greasy as well. It didn’t seem to bother either of them. “We need to patch the hull, but that’ll be easy. It seems like whoever got it in here did so within the last year and patched it up, but left the job undone for some reason. Maybe they died. Anyway, the engine is the real problem. We’ve managed to find most of the parts we need to repair the engine and the electrical system, and I know we’ve got almost all the rest back at base. But there’s one part missing and I don’t think we have it. Right now, I need to go back to base to gather the parts and look for that one missing part. I’ll come back with Mitch and Copper tomorrow and we can get to work.”

“And I can travel with some of you,” Jennifer said, looking at David and the others. “Tomorrow we need to head around, talk with the other settlements. There’s an outside chance that they might have the part we’re looking for, but it’s unlikely.”

“What do we do if we can’t find it?” Cait asked.
